The shootings took place in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

(UPDATE) : The New York Times is reporting, "The suspect police encountered at the home of Hortman, the lawmaker who was killed, was wearing a vest, taser, and badge, impersonating a police officer, according to Chief Mark Bruley of the Brooklyn Park Police. 'No question, if they were in this room, you would assume they were a police officer.'"

The shooter was still on the scene when officers arrived at Hortman’s home around 3:35 a.m., but “the individual was able to escape during that exchange of gunfire,” said Drew Evans, head of the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said the suspect was wearing a vest, taser and a badge in an apparent bid to impersonate law enforcement.

They were also operating a vehicle that “looked exactly like an SUV squad car,” equipped with emergency lights.

The shooter left his or her fake police car behind with a manifesto inside and escaped on foot.

“No question, if they were in this room, you would assume they were a police officer,” he told reporters.

Authorities said they have “people of interest” they’re looking for, and had detained and questioned several individuals, but that no suspect was in custody as of late Saturday morning.

Residents near the Edinburgh Golf Course in Brooklyn Park received a shelter-in-place text notification on Saturday, alerting them to the early morning violence. It warned of a suspect wearing black body armor over a blue shirt. Authorities added that the shooter, who could still be pretending to be a cop, should be considered armed and dangerous.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, speaking in the news conference, confirmed that former state Democrat Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were shot and killed on June 14 in what he called a "politically motivated assassination."

In addition, state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were shot and are recovering in the hospital, he said.

The suspect also had "No Kings" flyers in his car, the Minnesota State Patrol confirmed, urging people to avoid those protests, which were scheduled throughout the state and country on June 14.

Minnesota lawmaker killed in ‘politically motivated assassination,’ governor says

Authorities said they found a manifesto believed to belong to the suspect that identified the lawmakers as the intended targets.

A top Minnesota Democrat and her spouse were fatally shot early Saturday by a gunman impersonating a police officer in what Gov. Tim Walz (D) called a “politically motivated assassination.” A second Democratic lawmaker and his spouse were seriously wounded in a shooting believed to be connected to the same suspect, authorities said.

Rep. Melissa Hortman was shot and killed at her home in Brooklyn Park, near Minneapolis. Hortman is the party leader in the State House and served as the speaker of the house until early this year.

State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were also shot overnight in an attack believed to be connected to the same suspect, police said. Superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Drew Evans said Hoffman and his wife were taken to a hospital where they underwent surgery for gunshot wounds after police found them. Hoffman and his wife are “in a difficult situation, but we’re cautiously optimistic that they will continue to improve,” Evans said.

Authorities said that when they searched the suspect’s vehicle, they found a manifesto that identified lawmakers as the intended targets.

Authorities said there is an extensive manhunt underway for the suspect involving the FBI and local police. Residents in Brooklyn Park remain under a shelter-in-place order which went out early Saturday.

Two Minnesota state lawmakers were shot in apparent "targeted" incidents on Saturday that left them in grave condition, officials said, and a manhunt is now underway for the gunman. UPDATE: THEY WERE KILLED.

A source familiar with the matter tells ABC News that the victims are state Sen. John Hoffman and state Rep. Melissa Hortman.

Both were shot at their homes and authorities believe the shooter was impersonating law enforcement, the source said.

Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman were shot to death in their homes by the same gunman wearing tactical gear and impersonating a law enforcement officer.

The two shooting locations were about 8 miles away from each other in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, just north of Minneapolis.

Both Hoffman and Hortman are Democrats. Hortman is the former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

The FBI is helping with the manhunt, two sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is also on the scene. Walz said he's activated the State Emergency Operations Center.
